Another Close Escape

I found my new love on the internet,
She’s 46 the same age as me,
She lives what seems such an exciting life
Her pictures conjured up such fun fun times
But those pictures are crumpled and yellow at the edges
And things weren’t quite as they seemed
And my new love isn’t quite as carefree as the girl of my dreams

Shes set in her ways and grumpy as hell
Smokes too much and drinks too much as well
She’s dull and shes clingy and a little bit scary
Her books about the black arts have made me quite wary
She says Im the best lover shes ever had
And of course at first that made me glad
But how can I be what can she see in me
When its all been a bit disappointing really

I think Im gonna call the whole thing off
I really think that’s best
While she falls in love, Im filled with dread
Thoughts of life insurances and me waking up dead
Im going back to living alone
Its much simpler and safer I really cant wait
I’ll climb out the bathroom window while she’s sleeping in bed
Shimmy down her drainpipe, sprint up the pathway and leap over her gate

To Freedom…phew…another close escape

The prettiest girl I’ve seen

But I never made her my own my

Barbara was the only one I thought she was so cool
But Barbara played me
Just like a fool
And I never got to take her home my

Now she drives a Mercedes

Camden Town

As we walked through Camden Town,
I remember how the rain come down,
And the food that kept us warm,
As we sheltered from the storm,
And later in your room,
I saw the stars and the moon,
and as the days rolled by,
I caught the twinkle in your eye.

CHORUS:
And you were Queen of my Heart,
Queen of My Heart.

Now it’s been a long, long time,
And you and me we’re doing fine,
We got kids running round,
Born from the love we found,
And later in our room,
We’ll see the stars and the moon,
And as the years roll by,
Still got the twinkle in my eye.

CHORUS:
And you’re the Queen of My heart,
Queen of My Heart

As we walk through Camden down,
Watch out for the rain come down,
Have some food to keep us warm,
As we shelter from the storm,
And later in our room,
we’ll see the stars and the moon,
and as the years roll by,
still got the twinkle in our eyes.

CHORUS:
You’re Still the Queen of my Heart,
Queen of my Heart,
Been there from the very start,
Queen of My Heart.

Candy Streets

On the streets that pave my fate,
On the streets of cobblestones and haze,
My memories of yesterday,
Along these streets are blowing away.

On the candy streets where I first met you,
You stole my mind everything I knew,
You made me faceless, took my breath,
But still I loved you though you were death.

Where the water yonder meets the sky,
That’s where your candy made me fly,
High above the world and out of reach,
Where the angel junkies preach.

On the candy streets where they sell escape,
To fools like us who don’t know it’s fake,
We swallow the lie to find salvation,
But just line their pockets and buy damnation.

Captain Baxters Saturday Night Special

Come and take a ride with me,
On the greatest ride of all,
Back to when you held my hand like you’d
never let it go,
Back to the fairground,
where we’d sneak in after dark,
waltzers and the hotdogs,
and lovers in the park

CHORUS:

Come and take a ride,
On Captain Baxters Saturday night,
All our friends will meet us there,
To ride Captain Baxters if they dare.

Come and take a ride with me,
Back to the 70’s,
Where we’d stack up our 45’s
Smoke number ones and dance all night
When you were in my arms my heart beat a billion times
Life was enchanted then when i was yours and you were mine

CHORUS

This old heart never seems to mend,
But I guess those times they had to end,
We grew up and grew apart
and said goodbye,
But I still think of you,
when the fair comes by

CHORUS

And now the fair
is back in town again,
I can smell the candyfloss,
just like I did back then,
The sounds and the bright lights,
Make me wanna cry,
I can see you standing by the fence,
From the corner of my eye

CHORUS…

Fag Ash Lil

Fag ash Lil your curtains coming down
I remember when you were the toast of every pub in London town
But that was such a long time ago
And most of them are in the ground those lucky men you’ve known
CHORUS:
And it was easy come easy go
Mines a G&T and so
We crashed along through the days and the years
Till the sounds of the to and fros were ringing in our ears

Fag ash Lil you were once so gay
But the endless lovers took that all away
And now the time has come to say goodbye
Do you regret it Lillian does it make you want to cry

The decade that made you was the decade that killed you
Your beauty and your friendliness they sealed your fate
And now the time has come to change your ways
Well fuck me Lillian for you it’s now too late
Chorus to fade

HAPPY HEART

I DON’T WANT MONEY AND NOT KNOW WHERE I BELONG
DON’T WANT RICHES AND NEVER FIND PEACE
DON’T WANT NO DEMI GODS TO CARRY ME ALONG,
DON’T NEED NO FALSEHOODS TO SANCTIFY ME.

CHR:

ALL I WANT IS A HAPPY HEART YEAH
ALL I WANT IS A HAPPY HEART

DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO THINK
DON’T TELL ME WHAT TO DO
DON’T TELL ME HOW I CAN BE JUST LIKE YOU
IF I HAD JUST A SMALL PIECE
OF THE THINGS THAT YOU OWN
WOULD IT MAKE ME BETTER,
WOULD IT MEAN I HAD GROWN?

CHR:

IF YOU GET LOST AND DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO
BEHOLD THE ONE GOD THAT WATCHES OVER YOU
YOUR NEVER AT HOME IF NOT UNDER THESE SKIES
NEVER ALONE IF WATCHED BY THOSE EYES

CHR:

I DON’T WANT MONEY AND NOT KNOW WHERE I BELONG
DON’T WANT RICHES AND NEVER FIND PEACE
I WANT TO GO ON A MOUNTAIN HIGH
I WANT TO TOUCH THE HAND OF GOD

CHR TO FADE….

Happy Hearts and Movie Dreams (Em,G,D)

Happy hearts and Movie dreams
Nothings ever what it seems
And reality can be quite grim
When fantasy is wearing thin
And all that’s left in front of you
Is emptiness
And all that’s left behind is a great big mess

Its hard to keep a smile on
When lifes pushing you down
It’s hard to join in the fun
When reality has you on the run
And the dreams that you once had
Have all turned bad
And the happy heart that you once owned
Is broken and turned to stone

But change is only a heartbeat away
That first smile is hard as hard anyway
And you hardly know your smiling
For the tears stinging your eyes
But you can do it if you choose to
You can do it if you try
When you embrace life again
No more need to cry

I am a Man

I am so meek and I am so mild,
I am so fragile, just like a child,
The things that you do with your guns and your bombs,
Break my heart in two and have done so long

CHORUS:
I am a man, a man with no strings,
And my head is full of so many things,
I am a man, a man with no strings,
And my heart is full of wonderful things

But I am indignant too and wont be done down,
And if you force me to, then I’ll chop you down,
I will you to do death, instead of you me,
I will wear your blood on my hands if it needs to be

For I am a man and often bemused,
No matter how hard I try, still Im confused,
I want to be good but inside I’m bad,
Want to be happy but this world makes me sad

I Drunk My DreamS

When I was a young man how far I had to go,
I reached for the stars,
and the moon too you know,
But real life soon caught me, reality’s a bitch,
Afore I know it I’m digging a ditch.

CHORUS:

I spent all me money at the end of the day,
I drunk all my dreams and I pissed them away.

I went up to London to find the streets of Gold,
But all that I found there was,
rain sleet and snow,
and I never made a penny,
and I never had a drink,
this London was bollocks,
reality stinks.

CHORUS:

So I comes back to me Mammys house,
In Essex for my Tea,
And I sets me down in Southend On Sea,
And I’ve been here ever since,
Choking for a drink,
But those Estuary views are,
better than you think.

CHORUS:

I Will Take You Home Again

I would take you home again,
If you would say your mine,
Though since you and I were lovers,
It’s been a long, long time

I was young and fanciful,
And you, you were my girl,
Since then a lot of waters flown by,
Lot of changes in this world

The world that we once knew my dear,
Was simpler than today,
And I wish that I could travel there,
Back home to yesterday

Wont you come back home with me,
And tell me you are mine,
And we’ll stay a while together,
In love so sublime

Repeat Verse 1.

In the face of you

I saw you the other day,
You didn’t see me turn away,
You’re near the end of your years,
The children’s laughter in your ears,
As you struggle down the road,
It’s a long, long way to go.

MID 8:
And it’s hard, and it’s tearing you apart.
It’s the saddest thing I’ve seen in a long long time, oh I saw death, both your’s and mine,
And it’s the hardest thing, I ever had to do,
To recognise my death, in the face of you.

I know what its like to be led out of the cold,
With teachers warm hand there for me to hold,
But I don’t know what it’s like and,
I hope I never do,
To be as old or as lonely as you.

In to every life a little rain must fall that’s true,
But I know there’s been a storm,
raging around you,
Well I’ve had my share of rain and I know there’s more to come,
But I’m weathering the storm and I got it on the run

Rollercoaster Ride

It’s only been a little while,
Since I first saw you smile,
Or knew that you were in the world,
And in that short time,
I’ve wished that you were mine,
And broken every bone in my heart

CHORUS:
So get on, hold tight,
Are you ready for the ride,
Hold on, real tight,
For the rollercoaster ride

It’s only been 2 weeks,
Since I first heard you speak,
And your voice it melted me away
And in that short time,
I’ve gone out of my mind,
And thrown all my sanity away

Well I’m waiting and I’m waiting
And I’m still anticipating
The moment when you will be mine
It doesn’t seem so short a time
It’s so long, it’s a crime
And it’s breaking every bone
In my heart

Sing Story Songs

We’ve sung about injustice and blood and death and war
We’ve sung until we’re sick of it and we can sing no more
We don’t want to shove it down you throat
Or make you ill at ease but the hatred all around us
Will bring us to our knees

So sing story songs,story songs,
Sing them to the world
Though no one has to listen
No one has to care
Still sing story songs, story songs
Sing them to the world
Oh I hope someone is listening
I hope someone is there

My god thinks that your god sucks and your god doesn’t know
How to bring his flock to righteousness, how to get us out this awful mess
And bang bang bang go the guns, and bang bang bang go the bombs,
But never a word from anybodys god to help the faithful along

Well maybe all these different gods should have a crisis call
And shake hands at the table in time to save us all
But maybe in the meantime, we ought to do it for ourselves
Just in case all these different gods mean to leave us on the shelf

Sweet Mary Jane

I used to know a girl a long time ago,
And I still see her most everywhere I go,
Cos she’s in my head and in my mind,
Guess I’d still see her if I was blind

Chorus:
She brought me love like the stars above,
Brought me love, Sweet Mary Jane,
Then she made me cry like the pouring rain,
Broke my heart, Sweet Mary Jane

While all around me, the worlds rolled by
I’ve stayed here without you in ‘75
Nothing has changed for me, nothings moved on
I’ve made a life of missing you,
though I know it’s wrong

Chorus:
Cos you brought me love, like the stars above,
Brought me love, Sweet Mary Jane,
Then you made me cry like the falling rain,
Broke my heart, Sweet Mary Jane

Repeat Verse 1 & Chorus

The Border

I’ve been pinning my heart on my chest
And running around in this bullet proof vest
Cos everyone’s trying to shoot me down
Everyone in this town

The bullets are flying as I’m singing this song
To all the young dead boys who never done wrong
Just signed up to fight for what they believed
And were put in the ground too soon, too young

Those brave boys are flying, they’re running tonight
To get to the border before they run out
Of luck and are caught and are beaten and killed
And there’s nothing left of them, nothing at all

The sun has been shining on me all along
In the heat of the desert where everything’s going
To come to an end, will you still be my friend
When I tell you that I can’t fight anymore

I’m going to run to the border, run while I can
I’m turning my back on this hostile old land
Cos everyone’s trying to shoot me down
Everyone in this town

The Waves Crash The Breakers

The Bright lights are fading away,
The golden mile is rainy and grey,
I miss you and the summer too,
The waves crash the breakers and I’m feeling blue

I used to come down here a long time a go
Remember the places we used to go
To the bright lights on Saturday nights,
Youth in our hearts and love in our sights

We were young then, still in our teens,
I was a king then and you were my queen,
But the bright lights they faded to blue,
The waves crash the breakers and I’m missing you

Repeat Verse 1.

TODAY COULD BE…

LATELY I’VE BEEN FEELING KIND OF LOW,
COS YOUTH HAS GONE AND I DID NOT SEE IT GO,
BUT THIS MORNING,
WHEN THE WIND WAS IN MY EARS,
AND THE DARKNESS WAS PLAYING WITH MY FEARS,

Chorus:

I THOUGHT TODAY COULD BE A really good day
TODAY COULD BE THE VERY BEST OF DAYS
Today could be as good as any day
today could be the very best of days

yeah lately I’ve been feeling kind of low
cos love is gone and I barely felt it go
and while you were looking at me with no love
inside I was screaming enough is enough

so I moved along, got out of this cell
where I had become just a shell
and I grabbed what I could with both hands
for were here only briefly woman & man

Too Long in the Tooth

How would it be, a dalliance with me
How would it make you feel
I’m too long in the tooth to tell you the truth
If my heart you were looking to steal

I’m set in my ways and all of my days
Are filled with what I desire
My hearts too old and too bloody damn cold
If you wanted to start a fire

I’m too far down the road, for you to lighten the load
I made my bed long ago
I’ve got beer whisky and wine and they’re sweethearts so divine
And they’re all I really desire

How would it be a dalliance with me
How would it make you feel
I’m too long in the tooth to tell you the truth
If my heart you were looking to steal
If my heart you were looking to steal
